Dear friends,

With this cahotic winter it is difficult to follow the planned organisation of our FISTC Championships.

We have just been informed that in Kraliky, for the European Championships next week-end it is raining today and there is no enough snow left to organise the race. They are trying to find another date for the organisation ef the mid and long Championships.

We should receive the information within a few days and of course will keep you posted immediately.

FISTC MD/LT World Championship 2013 - Innerkrems (A)

8 to 10 March 2013

Final result

Innerkrems is a really beautiful place for a Middle and Long Distance Championship, and despite the difficulty of the trail in high mountains all mushers enjoy the race.

However, as the mountain may be dangerous, today with the heavy snowfalls and the fog, organisers decided to cancel the third heat for security reasons. This was the only reasonable decision.

As a consequence, here are the 2013 FISTC European Champions:

Final results

Innerkrems is a mythic race for all mushers who love distance races. The trail is magnificent but quite hard but when you arrive on top of the mountain you have one of the most beautiful views ever. There, thanks to Gasthof Raufner and Bernhard Moritz and his friends, we have been able to organise our 2013 European Championships Middle and Long distance.

On the first day the weather was nice but not cold and the snow was a little bit soft but all mushers enjoyed the race. Is is no surprise to see many longtrailers (20 teams) who spent the Friday night at the bivouac, always a nice evening. They started from the bivouac for the second heat but this evening they share the musher dinner with all the other mushers who run in middle distance.

This morning the weather was sunny and not too cold, in the afternoon there has been a little bit of rain that quickly changed into snow. However, during the race the trail was faster than yesterday.

As we had a little communication problem yesterday, we give you the leaders in each category after this second day:

Sunday 26 Febryary 2012 - 3rd Manche

Sunday we have had the third and final heat of this really splendid FISTC European Championship Middle Distance and Long Trail.
In the morning the weather was cloudy and really foggy on the stake-out and at the start and finish line. From time to time the visibility did not exceed 30m and it was also snowing, but it was excellent for dogs and mushers.
All trails had been prepared once again in a perfect way and as they were a little bit icy, they were much faster than the first two days.
Yesterday evening the musher dinner was very well organised and all mushers and their friends enjoyed it.
All longtrailers left from the normal starting place at 10:00 every two minutes. Once again all longtrailers were so happy with this beautifull race that has been an excellent publicity also for the other race the "TRANSALP VAUDOISE", a six days race organised by the FISTC Swiss club every year in early February that also finishes here in Gryon.
The leader in LTO, Eric Martinez (F) has won the title of European Champion, while Beate Jaehnig (D) is second and vice-European Champion with a total time difference of 12'. Third and Bronze medal is the Swiss Eric Chateau.
Another German musher, Wolfgang Speer, is the winner in LT2.
The European Champion in LT1 class is Muriel Dufros (F) and vice Champion is Frantisek Sadilek (CZ).

In Middle distance we have had once again a spectacular race.
In SJ2, Zdenka Duskova (CZ) gets the title of European Champion and the vice-champion is Walter Geringer (A).
Roman Reistetter in SkJ 1dog class is European Champion (I cannot remember how many titles he has wonduring all these years in the FISTC with his beautiful Siberian Husky female) and Gerald Buet (F) is the vice-champion.
In O class Jean Combazard (F), European Champion did not leave any chance to win to Baltasar Gallardo from Spain who is the vice Champion.
The Swiss Donato Egli, one of the really best mushers I have met in recent years is European Champion in A class followed by Andrea Marcenaro (I), vice-European Champion.
In B1 class the French musher, Elodie Darras, wins the title, and the vice champion is the Italian Claudio De Ferrari. In B2 Alain Diffort (F) is the European Champion and Florian Thevoz (CH) who was also one of the organisers of the race is vice-champion.
In C1 class, Christophe Sudan (CH), wins the title as Filippo Piccinini (I), second and vice champion who was faster on the third day could not recover all the time lost on the first day.
In C2, Three French mushers got the three medals with Anthony Coffre (Junior) becoming European Champion with his three Greenland dogs (the ones that fighted between themselves in Travisio) and Laurent Blot is vice Champion (4 Greenland dogs) while Sebastien Parent gets the Bronze medal.
Another French junior, Jason Fournier wins the title of European Champion in D1 class but the Italian Rinaldo Marioli gets the silver medal and title of vice champion, while the French Marc Joguet finished at the third place with the bronze medal.
In D2 Jean Michel Hoog is European Champion with a difference of only 31 seconds on the second and vice Champion Lionel Eich (F), both with 2 Malamutes. What a race, 31 seconds difference after three days and 4 hours and 45 minutes of race !!!

What a beautiful championship ! All mushers were happy and they all expresed their thanks to the organisers and also to the excellent FISTC Vet on this race, an Italian young vet Alessandro Martini who will be on the next FISTC Championships Cart and sprint.
And once again many thanks to the Swiss club CSCPT and the city and community of Gryon for such a perfect organisation and the FISTC and many mushers said while leaving, see you soon again in Gryon!

Saturday 25 Febryary 2012 - 2nd Manche

To day, Saturday we have had an almost perffect race.
The weather was cloudy from time to time and not hot, so almost perfect for dogs and mushers. All trails had been prepared in a perfect way and were much faster than yesterday.
Should there be a perfect race in mid and long distance, Gryon is close to be that one.
All longtrailers left the bivouac this morning at 8:00, every two minutes after a really nice evening with "raclette", music and drinks and night spent at about 7km from the stake-out. Despite the difficulty of the trail, that is really tough to run with heavy sleds, all longtrailers were so happy !! This is the right mentality for mushers.
The leader in LTO is Eric Martinez (F), closely followed by Beate Jaehnig (D). Another excellent German misher, Wolfgang Speer, is first in LT2 with 8 Siberian Huskies. The LT1 class is leaded by Muriel Dufros (F) followed by Frantisek Sadilek (CZ). We should note how good these women are in long trail.
In Middle distance we have had once again a spectacular race. In SJ2, Zdenka Duskova CZ)increased slightly her advance on Walter Gehringer (A) second. Roman Reistetter in SkJ 1dog class also increased his advantage on the second, Gerald Buet (F).
The O class is leaded by Jean Combazard (F) closely followed by Baltasar Gallardo (E).The Swiss Donato Egli, leads the A class followed by Andrea Marcenaro (I).
The B1 and B2 classes continue to be leaded by French mushers, respectively Elodie Darras and Alain Diffort, who both increased the gap with their direct competitors, Claudio De Ferrari (I) and Florian Thevoz (CH).
In C1 class, Christophe Sudan (CH), continues to lead this class in front of Filippo Piccinini (I). In C2, Three French mushers are leading the class with Anthony Coffre (Junior) being to day again the fastest with his three Greenland dogs.
Another French junior, Jason Fournier leads the D1 class but he is now folowed by another French musher, Marc Joguet who passed Rinaldo Marioli (I) but the time difference is now of only 1 minute.
In D2 Lionel Eich (F) has passed the other French Jean Michel Hoog, both with Malamutes.
Tomorrow, the finals will be quite exciting as, with such tough trails, nothing is done yet.
But what a beautiful championship, with all mushers being happy (or too tired to complain, lol).
And once again many thanks to the Swiss club CSCPT and the city and community of Gryon for such a perfect organisation and warm welcome.

Friday 24 Febryary 2012 - 1st Manche

Today, Friday we have had a fantastic sunny day. The place is really beautiful and all musher agreed that they have been racing on some of the most beautiful trails in Europe.
The weather was sunny but a little bit hot, with a max temperature of 8°C, but that cause no injury or problem to any dog.
Due to the splendid alpine environment, all trails were quite tough but also extremely attractive and all mushers enjoyed them.
However it was a real tough and selective championships with the level difference of 900 m for small teams and up to 1900 m for long teams and longtrailers.
In Middle distance we have had a really spectacular race. In SJ2, the nice Czech lady Zdenka Duskova wins the first heat, while our Slovak Champion, Roman Reistetter leads the Skj 1dog class.
IThe O class is leaded by Jean Combazard (F) closely followed by an excellent Spanish musher, Baltasar Gallardo. The Swiss Egli, an astonishing musher, leads the A class, while the B1 and B2 classes are leaded by French mushers, respectively Elodie Darras and Alain Diffort.
In C1 class, another Swiss musher was flying over the snow, Christophe Sudan, leading t
his class in front of Filippo Piccinini the 2011 European Champion. In C2, Three French mushers are leading the class with Anthony Coffre (Junior) being the fastest.
Another French junior, Jason Fournier leads the D1 class, while in D2 another French Jean Michel Hoog with his Malamutes is first.
Tomorrow will be another beautifull day and we expect a lot of remarkable races in all classes.
Finally for the longtrailers, trails were quite hard but the bivouc place was really nice with fire, wine and "Raclette" (a Swiss specialty), offered by the city of Gryon with anice athmosphere and music.
Tomorrow the continuation of the race and the pictures of the race...
But what a beautiful race and a perfetc Swiss organisation.

Report of the race

This is really a strange winter. While in most FISTC Member countries we have had almost no snow and most races have been cancelled since December, in Italy, in Ospitale di Fanano precisely we have had the opposite problem as we were close to being obliged to cancel our Middle and Long Distance Championships because there was... too much snow.

While on Sunday 27 February most of the rece trail was prepared and well packed, but with no more than 40cm of snow, suddenly it started snowing from Monday to Thursdya and we got more than 2.5 metres of snow. In addition the weather conditions were very poor with low clouds, fog and a lot of wind and, as a result, in some parts of the trail, due to the wind, we were facing 7 meters of snow!!

Despite all the efforts put by the local authorities and the members of the FIMSS it became impossible to prepare the original trail. So on Friday we had to find a solution. Under the authority of Olivier Favre and with the efforts made by all parties, it has been possible to offer to the mushers a two days race with 100% security but with two runs of about 20 km per days for the LT, SJ, A and O teams, the smaller classes, C and D doing only one run per day.

Our dogs are not always used to cross other teams or to start for two runs on the same day, but as usual they were able to do even what we did not expect they would do.

Finally all teams were happy after the race and even one of them congratulated the organisers as he found that was the best race he did in his life! We should not forget to mentions Simonetta, the cook, as she pleased all mushers and their family with probably the best musher dinner we ever had.

All the teams that participated should be congratulated for the remarkable behaviour and fair play they showed during the three days of the race, but once again our polar dogs have shown how good they are in all circumstances.

Nobody will forget this race. Now the season is over and the FISTC had its three Championships. We will now immediately start preparing the next season.

FISTC MD/LT European Championship 2010 - Oravska Lesna (SK)

18 - 22 February 2010

Oravska

Just after the succesfull European Championship Sprint in Donovaly, mushers had to drive only 85 km to reach Oravska Lesna where were organised the European Championships Middle and Long distance on 18 to 21 February 2010.

Oravska Lesna is a very nice new location where the nature is still wild, close to the Polish border. A very cold place too, with temperature like -16°C on Tuesday evening. All trails were in perfect conditions, long trails and quite tough also, good trails for a European Championship. Unfortunately, while on Wednesday morning we still had some -12°C, temperature jumped suddenly to + 9°C and it started raining...

On Friday morning at the first start, the trail was really tough due to the soft and wet snow. In these conditions the 43 km, that in reality corresponded to over 51 km/effort due to changes in altitude over the trail, represented more racing time than two normal heats on another trail. In addition during the night between Friday and Saturday, the longtrailers were sleeping with their dogs under a constant rain. The very poor weather conditions on Saturday morning as well as trail conditions obliged the race Marshal and the organisers to stop the race.

FISTC MD/LT European Championship 2009 - Inzell (D)

21th to 22nd of February

logo inzell

Another successfull European Championship MD/LT

Just one week after the fabulous World Championships Sprint in Werfenweng (A), the FISTC has organised its European Championships Middle Distance and Long Trail in Inzell on 21 and 22 February 2009.
Originally planned in Italy, we needed to move these Championships due to too much snow in Italy and to a high risk of avalanches that could not allow the Italian organiser to organise them safely and on the planned trails. Within two days we succeeded, with the help of the German SSD and particularly to its SSBayern Club, in organising these FISTC Championships 2009 in very good conditions.
While in 2008 we had been obliged to move from Inzell to Innerkrems due to missing snow, this year we have had a lot of snow. In fact it has been snowing almost all the time making conditions very tough for mushers, and particularly for skiers. However, trails have been perfectly worked out.
On Saturday morning, Longtrailers started first in the eisstadion and after 38 kms arrived at the bivouac. The SSB sprint race started before our middle-distance teams went on the trails that were 38 kms for A and O, 28 kms for B and Pulka and 22 kms for C and D classes. Everything went well as there was a close cooperation between the organisers of the two races.
On Sunday morning it was snowing again, but most mushers were happy on the finish line. Our Vet team, led as usual by Arno Roos, had very little work as, once again, most dogs were less tired than their mushers on the finish line. Despite the difficult weather conditions, most participants were happy and will keep excellent memories of this really beautifull race. The pricing ceremony was as usual very emotional.
Big congratulations to all teams that finished that beautifull but tough race !
We hope that in a short future we will come back again to Inzell to organise a three days European Championship MD/LT in this really wonderfull city.

Thanks once again to Inzell and to SSB!

PRESENTS

The result list after second day- THE FINAL RESULT LIST

The official photos- http://www.velphoto.it/europei_fistc.htm

18th of February 2007

Unfortunately, due to higher temperatures and worn down trails, FISTC officials took the decision to cancel the third heat of the Mid distance and Long trail European Championships in Pian Cansiglio.

This was a necessary decision taken in order to avoid any risks for the dogs and the equipment of the mushers. Anyway, this sad decision was approved by all mushers present at the musher evening.

The FISTC and the FIMSS decided that we could come back here in this really beautiful place in the near future and then organice a perfect Championship.

17th of February 2007

FISTC European Championships in Middle Distance and Long Trail started yesterday in Pian Cansiglio (Italy). The site is really beautiful, and the race would have been perfect if ... there had been enough snow. Due to the lack of snow we needed to move the stake-out area to a higher but smaller place -- as well as the start and finish area to an even higher place.

The price giving ceremony

From the bivaque- The long trail race

From the trail

As you may see from pictures taken by long trail competitors on the trail, the weather has been really beautiful but unfortunately a little bit warm. However, thanks to the hard work provided by Mario Azzalini, the Trail Boss, and his team, and the FIMSS under the leadership of its President, Massimo Bassan, we have been able to run the first two days.

Longtrailers enjoyed their first two days of race as well as the “biwac” where they spent the whole night with their dogs. This morning they all went much faster on a frozen trail than yesterday. The Slovak Anton Miklovic is the leader of the LTO Class, and he is being followed by Petra Deggendorfer (D) and Jean-Marc Charneau (F). Our “Flying Secretary” Jana Henychova is first in the LT2 class with 8 Siberians, and her Slovak friend Juraj Potocek is second. Third is Holger Steiner (D) with his Malamutes. Fabien Fisher also enjoys his race in LT1 with four Malamutes.

The competitors

In Middle Distance, trails proved to be much faster today than yesterday. In D1 class two Italians, Pierangelo Patriarca and Rinaldo Marioli are compeeting for the first place, and Didier Fleury (F) is third. In C1, today Rocco Pigola (D) catched Erik Martinez (F) and now has an advantage of 4”. The title seems go to one of these two mushers, and at the third place we find Ondrej Stejskal (CZ). In C2 there is also a strong competition between Branislav Slany (SK) and Thierry Narcy (F) with less than two minutes in difference.

The title in B1 should go to Matteo Bartolini. He really has the fastest team in this class, and after two days he is 30’ in advance of the second - Daniel Foulon (F) followed by another French musher Yohann Philip. In B2, today Jan Kerul (SK) passed the Swiss Stephane Ruchet today getting the first place, and third is Daniel Chomette (F). The trail was really a tough one for Pulkaists with the present snow conditions. On such a difficult trail two Germans, Michael Hederich and Achim Kölzow are compeeting for the first place, while Florian Thevoz (CH) is third. In the A class another German musher is first, Jens Laudel, the French Yannick Weber is second and Manfred Komac (A) is third. After his World Champion title in sprint last week, Claudio De Ferrari (I) is most likely to be also European Champion in MD this week ! Second in that class is another Italian musher, Vanessa Bambi, and third is Wolfgang Hammerschmid (A).

Many positions may still change tomorrow... If weather conditions allow us to organice as well as today. Anyway it is another week-end of races on snow -- a rare event this year !

From the stake out

THE RACE IS CONFIRMED!!!!

mapa

As the Board of FISTC arrived here in Pian Cansiglio, it looked as shown on the picture above. On the way here we unfortunately did choose some difficult roads, and as the GPS will lead you the same way, we will recommend those coming from the north to go on the Highway A27 untill Exit VITORIO VENETO SUD continuing towards FREGONA. Then you will already see signs for Pian Cansiglio. This route is about 25 Km. longer, but much more easy to drive.

We wish you a safe drive and are looking forward to welcoming you here in a wonderfull landscape with good snow in the forests, where the tracks are waiting - well prepared.

Dear friends,

my name is KEN , the nickname of " kennel " and I'm the mascot of all the European Championships of F.I.M.S.S.: I've pleasure to invite you, in the name of FISTC and F.I.M.S.S. - FCI Division, to Pian Cansiglio ( BL ) for the MD-LT European Championship.

If you don't want to lose the right way to arrive to the stake-out, please follow the signals with my logo as indicated below.
Following these roads signals, you will arrive to the competition's area without problems .
The signals are very simple: if the leg of KEN points to the right you must turn to the right, if the leg of KEN points to the left you must turn to the left. Instead, if the leg of KEN points straight , this means that you are on the correct road.
