FISTC European Championship Sprint 2014 - Auronzo di Cadore (I)

Dear Mushers,

The cataclysmic weather conditions in Auronzo, where singe Friday they got over 4meters fresh snow and it wil continue snowing probably the whole week, lead us to cancel the race this week-end.

First of all most roads are closed and it is extremely difficult and dangerous to try to reach Palus san Marco (Auronzo).

Secondly, the stake-out and trails that were ready and perfect last Wednesday are under the snow and it becomes too difficult to prepare a good race under these conditions.

We are trying to reorganise the race for the 21-22-23 of February.

We apologise for the inconvenience, but  the whole area has been declared yesterday evening under status of Natural Disaster and the Army is trying to help the population. Actually there are also water and electricity problems for the local population.

The FISTC Board.

FISTC Sprint World Championship 2013 - Neukirchen am Großvenediger (A)

22-24. February 2013.

Day 3 - Sunday 24 February

Cold and cloudy weather with little snowfalls. Excellent trail conditions that all mushers and dogs enjoyed really very much.

As already foreseen yesterday this has been a tough competition and there have been some changes in the final classification compared to the leaders of yesterday. To show how tough it has been, just consider that for example in SKJ 1 Men, the difference in time between the first Michal Ivanco and the second Igor Stefan (both Slovaks) is 0.9 seconds.
Definitely, all participants enjoyed this race, perfectly organised with such short notice by the organisers that are true FISTC friends.

The pricing ceremony at 3:00 p.m. put and end to these 2013 FISTC World Championships Sprint. Now the next appointment will be in two weeks time in Innerkrems for our next FISTC European Championships Middle Distance and Long Trail.

Saturday Evening

First a few words about the Musher Evening we had yesterday.
The organisers this time made this special evening some more exciting compared to what has been done at earlier events.
We knew that they had arranged a musher evening but much at our surprise, mushers, handlers and their families were picked up by buses at the stake-out.
We arrived at the “Gondelbahn” and were brought to the top of the famous mountain Wildkogel. Coming out in the cold up there in the sunset was really an experience!!!
The red reflexion of the sun in the clouds was beautiful and the following dinner from tables with a variety of dishes was excellent and offered to all mushers and handlers.
After a few hours we went down again and were picked-up by bus and brought back to the stake-out area.
This was an evening to remember and we sincerely thank the organisation and the Mayor of the city of Neukirchen on behalf of all mushers.

Day 2 - Saturday 23 February

Today, with the sunny and cold weather the Wildkogel Arena showed us its beauty.
Sunny and cold weather, the conditions for the race were almost perfect and all mushers told us they enjoyed the race even more than yesterday, trails were faster and magnificent.
The competition is extremely tough in some categories and changes happened in the lead of some categories and the mushers will compete even more tomorrow to win the World Champion titles 2013.

ndid Wildkogel Arena where our local friends, together with Walter Treichl, succeeded in organising the FISTC 2013 World Championships Sprint after the cancellation of Donovaly.
Despite the very short notice the organisers of the race did a splendid job to solve our severe problem. We just may regret that many mushers could not get their holidays to join us as we really have a very beautiful race.
Yesterday evening we had a very nice opening ceremonyin the center of the beautiful city of Neukirchen am Grossvenedigerand a warm welcome from the Mayor of the city, Mr Peter Nindl, and all the inhabitants and tourists who were so happy to see the mushers from 9 countries and their beautiful dogs of the four Polar breeds. An evening with “Gluhwein”, snacks and music…
Today, the weather was cold and cloudy, perfect for the dogs. Trails were very well prepared and perfectly marked, so the mushers enjoyed this first day of race.

10 - 12 February 2012

DAY 3 - Sunday 12 february

This third day of the European Championships sprint was again cold, windy and snowy.
However, with more snow and a very good trail we could see a beautiful race.
Due to the snow all trails were slower than in previous days.
In Pulka Roman Reistetter (Slk) gets a new European Champion title, while Klaus Baümel (A) ended his very last sled dog race at the second place.
In Skijoring two dogs, Matjaz Ovsenek (Slo) gets his first title in this category, and the first title for Slovenia in FISTC history. Second is a nice Italian lady, Alessandra Lupezza and third the unlucky Slovak Marcel Matanin, who lost his dogs on the first day but then was the fastest on days 2 and 3.
Skijoring 1dog/1 was dominated by Slovak skiers with Igor Stefan becoming European Champion, Jan Mlynar second and Patrik Lucansky third.
Skijoring 1dog/2 was an Austrian story Manuel Haslacher becoming European Champion, with Romuald Schönfeld second and Sepp Brugger third.
Skijoring 1dog Women was dominated by German ladies and her Alaskan Malamutes, with Vicki Würfl becoming European Champion followed by Simone Nolte and Marina Gröschl.
In O class, Jean Combazard (F), just back from the “Grande Odissée” is European Champion and second we have Matteo Bartolini (I).
In A classs, Jurgen Stolz (D) is not only European Champion but also the fastest team on the trail ! Vice European Champion is Karl Rachbauer (A) very close to the first.
In B1 class the title of European Champion went to Massimo Martini (I) closely followed by Carel Van de Mortel (NL).
In B2, Giorgio Pirini (I) wins the title closely followed by Bernd Sauerhöfer (D) who, despite his best performance in days 2 and 3, could not catch the time lost on the first day.
In C1, Alexander Serdjukov (A) wins the title as he has been the fastest on each of the three days. Second and vice European Champion is Roberto Mattasoglio (I).
In C2, the French Laurent Blot is European Champion and vice European Champion we find Martin Zapletal (CZ) bith teams with Greenland dogs. Third place goes to Harry Braeckmans with four Malamutes. We should note in this category the problems encountered by the French Anthony Coffre whose dogs started fighting between themselves and the perfect behaviour of Ron de Ruiter who could stop and help him, he is a musher with great fair play.
Rhe D1 class was dominated by Christoph Rotter (A) European Champion, followed by Graziella Beltrame (I) and the third place was won by a very young junior, Marc Wiatowski (D). As such Marc Wiatowski is the 2012 FISTC European Champion junior, second junior and vice European Champion is the young and excellent musher coming from Russia, Alexey Tarazanov, third junior is Valentina Bottega (I), followed by another four junior mushers.
Finally, in the D2 class the title was won by Bernd Kirstein (D) and his two Greenland dogs and second is Sepp Brugger (A) with his Malamutes.

This is the end of the Championships sprint 2012, now we move to Gryon in Switzerland for the Championships MD/LT.

Next year the sprint championships will again take place in Italy, but on the other side of the country, close to the French border, and organised by the other Italian club CIS (the club that organised Auronzo).

DAY 2 - Saturday 11 february

After a very windy and snowy night the second heat took place today. Trails have been well prepared during the night and the trail marking - that has been redone - was perfect.
The vet. team, with three very experienced and specialised vets (including a Norvegian just arrived from the Femundlopet in Sweden) has impressed all participants. We had five vets in total on the Site!
All trails were in better conditions than yesterday but a lit bit slower because of the new snow.
In most categories it is impossible to figure out who will win tomorrow.

FISTC Sprint World Championship 2011 - Donovaly (SK)

11 – 13 february 2011

11th of February 2011 – Day ONE

Yesterday at the Delegates Meeting we were happy to inform that the 10th WC Sprint in Donovaly would take place as earlier informed on our Website.
This was in direst contradiction to what some Mushers have spread around, and of course were happy being able to open this big Event.
Thanks to our Organizers and their helpers they created a good Trail form what seemed to be impossible. W can be very thankful to the Donly Klub for this, and we cannot thank them enough.
The Mushers and especially the Skiers had some difficulties but almost everyone were happy having done the Trail.

Despite th Weather conditions 140 Teams started today. In SJ2 the first skiers are within 37 sec. With the Italian Christian Geier on the First Place.
SJ1 is led by Jili Krkoska in front of tow Slovaks – Roman Reissteter and Ivan Kasko.
Brigita Albertova (SK) is leading the SJ Women Class.
Two French Mushers – Jean Combazard and Patric Logais are fighting for the first Place in the Class O.
Mateusz Soreovka, the Flying Polish Musher is first in A, C,and D Classes!
Berndt Sauerhoefer is leading the new A2 Class.
Stefan Krkoska is first in B1 Class but closely followed by Andi Birkel.
The French Alain Diffort is leading the B2 Class, Waldemar Stawoweczyk (POL) is first in C2 Class, and Bernd Kirsten in D2 Class. It can be noted that all 2 Classes are led by Greenland Dogs despite a god opposition from Alaskan Malamutes and Samoyeds.
Tonight Temperatures will go below -10 ° C. And the Race will restart at 9.00 in Presence of the Prime Minister of Slovakia and several Ministers.

Resultlist 11.02.2011

12th of February 2011 - DAY 2

How lucky can we be? - FISTC and our mushers!
Yesterday evening it was raining pretty much, but as the sky was cloudy the temperature did not drop as the weather forecast said. Because of this we woke up to snow and wind. The trails were very much better than yesterday which pleased the skiers mostly. In the stakeout area and in the starting / finishing area we had wind that occasionally caused white out, but in a couple of hours the wind reduced its force having blown the clouds away leaving a clear blue sky.

In SJ2 the first 3 are within 19 seconds so everything is opened for the title between Sebastian Astelbauer (A), Christian Geier (A) and Stephan Krkoska (CZ).
In SJ1 Jilji Kroska (CZ) is leading the category in front of Roman Reistetter (SK) and Ivan Vaško (SK).
Brigita Albertova (SK) is leading the SJ Women class.
Today Patrick Logeois (FR) on a faster trail was able to catch Jean Combazard (FR! and is now leading the O class.
Mateuz Zorowka (SK) is still leading the A, C1 and D1 classes and maybe he will be the 1st triple world champion of the FISTC.
Berndt Sauerhofer (D) is the solid leader of the new A2 class.
Stepan Krkoska (CZ) leads the B1 class, closely followed by Andi Birkel (D).
Alain Diffort (FR) is the strong leader of the B2 class with his Greenland dogs.
Waldemar Stawowczyk (PL) and his Greenland dogs are leading the C2 class and Bernd Kirstein (D) leads the D2 class.

Let’s see what tomorrow brings!

Kind Regards from
The Board

Resultlist 12.02.2011

13th of February 2011 - DAY 3

Lower degrees today and sunny weather made this Championship a great success. The trails were during the night again groomed and repaired to an extent beyond every musher beliefs.
For the working members of the Board it was a great satisfaction to see the happy faces of our musher. It seemed that also the musher were happy, also we avoided accidents today which unfortunately was not the case of yesterday as a Polish musher broke his arm and was hospitalized. By the end of the Races we could notify a great deal of happiness and the Pricing Ceremony carried on and the winners of the World Championship were:

FISTC Sprint European Championship 2010 - Donovaly (SK)

Donovaly 12 – 14 february 2010

A great European Sprint Championship

This Championship was originally planned for Taxenbach (A), but with a very short notice it was moved to Donovaly (Slovakia) because the municipality of Taxenbach could not carry out this event.
Luckily our friends of the Donly Club were able to organize a superb European Championship in stead.
The weather conditions were cloudy and windy for all tree days of the race, but thanks low temperatures the trail was in good condition and perfectly worked out.
The fair play of our musher was excellent: We had no official protests.

We do thank again our Slovak friends, and particularly thanks to the Race Marshall Pavel Toma who during the price giving Ceremony announced, that this has been his last Championship.
Now we wait for the 2011 World Championship in Donovaly, which is also the twentieth Anniversary since their very first sled dog race, and we are certain, that this will be a great event.

Your Board says thank you to all participants, and we hope to have many musher coming next Year.

Saturday the 14th of February

During Friday night we had much snow. Actually 30 cm in the lower part and 40 cm on the top. Normally this is positive, butas the snow came late in the night, it made things a bit difficult. Due to security it was decided not to use the Open trail and let this class do the A trail because of risk of avalanges. The rest of the trail were ok and safe, but of corse a bit soft.
The snow kept falling all day and influenced on the number of spectators, it was difficult to make it up here. The City of Werfenweng had arranged for Shuttle Busses, and this helped a lot. At the end of the day we were happy having had only success and best of all good behavior of our musher, This means another day without protest, and also dogs in absolute fine shape.
The traditional Musher Evening with live music and dancing went well. The major of the City of Werfenweng Mr. Peter Brandauer made a speach thanking the FISTC and its musher for coming and every mushe was given a gift as a memory of this beatiful race.
The weather forecast is looking fine so we are looking forward to another good day.

After the first day of the WC in Werfenweng

The opening cerimony yesterday evening was something to see. The comunity of Werfenweng has done a fantastic job and prepared everything to the smallest details in a perfect form and the Championship was opened by the Major of the city, Major Peter Brandauer and highranking politishers. The musher were presented per country by entering with torches and the opening cerimony closed with spectacular fireworks.
On the first day of race we had shifting periods of snow ad a little bit of sun. The trail itself is pretty hard crossing a mountain side and many musher said it was quite hard to do the trail, but everyone were happy and we are looking forward to a great race tomorrow.

The result list 11-02-2007, The FINAL RESULT LIST

IT HAS BEEN FANTASTIC !!!!!

Yes indeed, this 2007 FISTC World Championship has really been fantastic. The third day of the race provided some surprises, as we expected yesterday evening. The trail today was perfect, even better than yesterday, thanks to the excellent work done thanks to the Trail Boss Antonio Piazza and his colleague Renato Alberoni. In fact, the whole CIS,- Club Italiano Sleddog, can be praised for the collective work that has been done. With the support of the city and local authorities, and with the help of the young association Ad Maiora, everything was perfect. Which also clearly was said by so maany mushers -- again -- thank you so much.
The FISTC thanks all those who helped during this weekend and particiularly CORTE´S RANCH who kindly allowed us to have a free connection to the internet, that we were able to update information for you.

Photografer-CORRADI Philippe- www.corradi.be

The quality of the trail was such, that our Vet., Arno Roos, had very little work these three days, and particularly today no injuries occured, and ther were no feet problems on this extremely fast and beautiful trail. The stake-out was also very well prepared and large enough for the 161 participants, a big improvement from last time in 2004.

The price giving ceremony

The 2007 World Champion in ski-joering is the Slovak Roman Reistetter in a class where many athleets could beexpected win, in particular the second one, Jilji Krkoska (CZ) and the third, Frederic Gourves (F) these two being very close to each other(12”). In the Pulka Class, the title went to Klaus Baumel (Austria) a great sportsman, and the only one being able to beat Berit Weisscher, the flying Dutchwoman, 45” faster today than the winner ! The Frenchman Claude Paris went on the third step of the podium.

In the O Class, De Ferrari is a perfect World Champion, having been the fastest every day. He is a great musher with a really beautiful team. The second is a newcomer in this class, Jean Combazard (F), and the third is Hagen Muller (D). Jurgen Stolz (D) is another great winner in the A class, but he was closely followed by an excellent Francesco Becconcini (I) and the issue of the race remained uncertain until the last moment on the finish line. Rainer Diemer (D) was third in this exciting class. Germany also won in the B1 class, where Georg Patsch is World Champion this year, closely followed by Karl Rachbauer (A) and Michel Laboure (F).
In the B2 class, we have another German World Champion, Bernd Sauerhofer, who achieved his eighth title as World Champion with his Greenland dogs ! After him - two French mushers, also using Greenland dogs, went on the podium: Didier Kerouedan and Daniel Chomette.

The C1 class is always the most important in number and for the suspends. Many teams could be expected to be the winner, but Giovanni Nardelli (I) is the winner. Alexander Serdjukov (A) is second, but the third is the young Niels Havenaar, who did a fantastic third heat and overtook Christian Geier (I). The Slovak Peter Marcin became World Champion in C2 and Myriam Charasson (F) is second - both with Greenland dogs, while Horst Klank and his Samoyeds took the third place.
One year after the other, the young junior Jean Baptiste Labouré continues to surprise everybody. Having been European Champion in St. Ulrich, he became today World Champion in Auronzo, and he is 13 y.o. ! He started only fourth today but made the best time of the day. The second one is another French, Loic Marchal, and the third is Tobias Hager (A). In this D1 class there were also many junior mushers, and as a result there has been a junior podium. The Junior World Champion 2007 is Jean Baptiste Laboure (F), the second is Anthony Chevalley (F) and the third Diana Bretschneiderova (SK) but we wish also to mention two young Italians, Sebastian Ranigler and Micol Sajia. Finally, the last class, D2, was won by Jaroslav Banoci (SK) preceding Petr Hubka (CZ) and Alain Diffort (F).

For the Nations Cup, France jumped on the higher step of the podium, Germany was second and Italy third. Finally all mushers were happy as well as all their dogs, and we succeded once again in having an excellent FISTC Championship. We hope to see all again next year in Donovaly!

The second day - 10th of February 2007,

The result list 10-02-2007, The result list after two days

The second day of the FISTC World Championships 2007 has been one of the most beautiful in these lasts years. The trail was perfectly packed, and the low temperature in the morning ( minus 8°C) allowed all mushers to go much faster and to improve their times. Another important aspect of this Championship is that we improved once again in having not only the best Veterinarian team but also this year a physiotherapist that helped several dogs to recover immediately from small accidents that may happen on the trail. Once again the animal wellfare is one of the top preoccupations of the FISTC.

From the musher evening

From the race

Roman Reistetter from Slovakia took the lead in the ski-joering class, and was followed by Jilji Krkoska (CZ) and Frédéric Gourves (F). In the Pulka class, Berit Weisscher (NL) jumped to the second place while Klaus Baumel (A) remained at the 1st place. Claude Paris lost a few seconds. The O class is totally dominated by one of the nicest mushers of the race, Claudio De Ferrari who drives like… Schumi ! He is followed by Jean Combazard (F) and Hagen Müller (D). Great exitement in A where at least five mushers might be on the podium tomorrow. Today Roderick Glastra had the best time, but Jurgen Stolz still leads the class immediately followed by Becconcini. Georg Patsch in B1 has 3min. advantage on the second, Karl Rachbauer (A) followedby Michel Labouré (F). The B2 class is dominated by Greenland dogs, and among them, the fastest is very well known - Bernd Sauerhofer (D), folowed by two French teams, Didier Kerouedan and Daniel Chomette. Two beautiful Malamute teams are also competing in this class.

In the C1 class, Giovanni Nardelli, the “Flying Italian” increased his advantage on Alexander Serdjukov by only… 1 second and has only 20 secs of advantage. Third in this class is Christian Geier (I) and 37 teams are still in competition in this class. The C2 class is dominated by Peter Marcin (SK), Myriam Charasson (F) and Christa Sauerhofer. In D1, the competition is between Austria and France with Graziella Beltrame (I) ready to jump in also. Loic Marchal, first has only 13” on the second Jurgen Kurzer. Another Slovak leads the D2 class, Jaroslav Banoci, followed by Peter Hubka (CZ) and Alain Diffort (F).

we expect thet tomorrow will show some fantastic competitions in classes, where many mushers have the chance to enter the podium. Anyway this race, the first one this season for many mushers from several countries, will already remain as one of the best FISTC Championships in Italy.

From the Trail

The first day- 9th of February 2007
The result list 09-02-2007

Auronzo di Cadore is a super city, a perfect host for the FISTC World Championships 2007. Not only do we have one of the most beautiful trails in Europe, but we are also lucky enough to have snow. Trails are in perfect conditions, and in addition the new layer of ten more centimeters of snow that came tonight, made a super scenario for the race. All 161 starters enjoyed this first day, with low temperatures and a sunny sky.

The competition is ofcourse very hard in all categories at a World Championship.

In Ski-Joering the Czech Jilji Krkoska is first, but closely followed by the Slovak Roman Reistetter and Frederic Gourves, France. Klaus Baumel, Claude Paris and Thomas Jaeger are leading the Pulka class. In the O class, the Italian Claudio de Ferrari with his super team is followed by a newcomer in this class, Jean Combazard from France, and the German - Hagen Muller. Jurgen Stolz leads the A class, and Georg Patsch the B1 class, and it looks verz much as Germany this year want to win the Nations Cup. Berndt Sauerhofer and his Greenland dogs are first in the B2 Class, a category dominated by Greenland dogs but with beautiful and fast teams of Samoyeds and Malamutes. In the C1 class, the most successfull musher the recent years, Giovanni Nardelli is flying over the category, but the first 8 teams are within the same minute. The Slovak Peter Marcin is leading the C2 class. In D1, French and Austrian mushers are compeeting for the first places and Loic Marchal is first today. In D2, the Slovak Jaroslav Banoci is leading after this first day, that was a total success, and for tomorrow we have been promissed very nice and cool weather----- a fantastic day again.

INFORMATION from St.Ulrich 18.2.2006:

The result list after the 2nd day

The second heat started at 9:00 am, Saturday the 18th. After a cold night everything was frost and the trail was very hard and fast at least for the first categories Skj, Pulka and O category. During the day the weather changed and the sun showed up again. It has been a beatuful day, but the trail became a little bit soft when the C2 and D classes started. Tomorrow, the races promises to be extremely competed as for example in the C1 class there are only six seconds between the first and the third team after two days of competition.

INFORMATION from St.Ulrich 17.2.2006:

The result list after 1st day

The first heat started at 9:30 am, Friday the 17th. Thanks to the organizers everything was well prepared. We can say that we have been lucky with the weather. Since morning a beautiful sun shine follows all competitors on the trail. The race had to take a break at noon because of the high temperature and animal welfeare supervisor together with FISTC veterinary advised to delay the race for three hours sothat the temperature became lower and the conditions got better. After the break the race continued on a perfect trail witch was prepared by the local snow specialists. In each category of the race the competion is very strong as in many categorie there are only a few seconds between the first teams. According to weather conditions, the second heat that will start tomorrow morning at 9:00 is very promising.

INFORMATION from St.Ulrich 16.2.2006:

The start list

16.2.2006
Today the mushers arrived at St. Ulrich in a rainy weather. A total of 158 will be on the start tomorrow, and today all the dogs were checked by the vetteam. There were no problems with the dogs found, so all the dogs can enter the competition tomorrow.

There was also a lot of work on the trail, because the rain damaged the trail a lot. But the trailboss and his team did a very good job and they did succeed in optimalizing the trail. The traillenghts are as follows Skj: 15 km, D class: 7km, C class: 10 km, B class: 15 km, A class: 18 km and O class: 22 km.

This evening the opening ceremony will be tonight at 19:30 hour, because of the weather the program had to be changed, but still it will be a night with lots of entertainment.

Saturday 12th of February, the World Championship continues. It is snowing constantly since early morning. The snow is very fine, therefore a real challange for mushers, dogs and organizers.

Photos provided by Thomas Ackermann

Also today everything is very well organized. The second heat took off at 9 am as planned. Prime minister of Slovakia Mikulaš Dzurinda has accepted the invitation and assisted at the start line. President of Slovakia Ivan Gašparovič and minester of economy Ivan Mikloš have enjoyed the atmosphere of the race so much, they decided to be a part of it today as well.

There was at least 25 thousand people who came to support the mushers and enjoy the race.

Fresh snow has made the trail very soft and much tougher today. It is possible that by tommorow as much as 40 cm of snow will fall on to the trail. The ones winning this race will be really the top mushers.

On Thursday, 10th of February the 7th World Championship F.I.S.T.C. 2005 Sprint - Pure breads was officially opened. The Sleddog racing has come to Donovaly. Grand opening brought the history and the flavor of Alaska to Slovakia once again.

The Major of Donovaly Miroslav Daňo, Slovak minister of economy Ivan Mikloš, sponsors and F.I.S.T.C delegates have warmly welcomed all nations participating at this year's race. The organizers have prepared a wonderful show, which brought to us a look at the history of mushing and Slovak folklore.

There are 160 mushers competing and 650 dogs running this year. They are top mushers representing 12 countries. Donovaly has 120cm of snow and the trail is well maintained.

The first heat was at 9 am, Friday the 11th. Thanks to the organizers everything was well prepared and controlled at the Start and Finish. The president of Slovak republic Ivan Gašparovič was a guest of honor and personally assisted at the start line. This left the delegates of F.I.S.T.C. and many others highly impressed. The first day of the World Championship went very smooth. There were no complaints raised so far towards the first heat. Mushers were hugging their dogs and shaking each other's hands passed the finish line. The air was filled with healthy competition, excitement and barking of the dogs.

The race has began at 9am.
